They have clearly demonstrated that they understand what cloud computing is, what customers want from it and have put forth a variety of offerings and engagements to help customers head down this path – mostly through internal cloud and strategic rightsourcing options.

IBM is promoting mainframe development as a way to reduce IT maintenance costs. The company today released Rational Developer for System z (RDz) version 7.6, which will look to attract new developers to mainframe development. Separately, IBM added a common repository to version 2.0 of Rational Team Concert for System z. According to Searle, the new repository is more consolidated regardless of the platform being developed on, bringing increased collaboration and information availability to distributed teams.

With this integrations, users of Rational DOORS who manage their software and system requirements in DOORS can link these to a test plan and test cases in Rational Quality Manager. This link enables requirements based quality, where requirements drive the test plan.

I started working on a new project, and here we used the IBM RTC (Rational Team Concert), which uses the IBM Jazz platform. I was amazed the way in which we could work in groups to develop software. Initially I have seen maintainers and developers add their names to identify the sections of code they changed and explanations of why they made the changes. With RTC on Jazz platform the RTC source control makes changes and delivers them to the RTC repository , which then tracks the sections of the code that are changed by whom and why. How cool is someone doing that for you. Well this is just one of the many features that I discovered with RTC.

RC1 for Rational Team Concert (RTC) 2.0 was released yesterday. Even though it's only been a year since the 1.0 release, RTC got a lot of updates. First of all, there is now an Enterprise edition, which allows an unlimited amount of developers on a single server instance, a big improvement for large organizations with more than 250 developers. Cross-server and cross-project linking has been improved and formalized, one of the user-visible capabilities is that you can now create dashboards that contain information of several projects. This allows several interesting scenarios, such as a "Project of Projects" for a Project Office in a large orginization, or different companies with their own ALM deployments working together through the shared Jazz link.

How Does Rational Jazz Compare with Open Source Solutions

The issue revolves around how IBM/Rational deals with open source competition,
and their close cousins the "cheap source" tools. You think of JIRA, Rally, Subversion, Version One and others.
There are a lot of open source solutions out there, some good, some not so good.
IBM/Rational has known for a while that many of their tools are slowly becoming commoditized,

From what I have seen from a demo that shows Rational Team Concert features accessed through an Eclipse client, the product targets more medium to large teams (even if currently there is a limitation of 250 users by server) that operate in a geographically distributed environments. Some "template" processes will be available with the tool for approaches like OpenUP or Scrum. Even if the product tries to get an "agile" label, the way it enforces structure and project reporting seems to make it more suited for projects that need (or want) strong auditing features.
