Rational Project Conductor 1.0 M8 MilestoneTrial Version

September 8, 2009 | Learn about the project

This is not the most recent version. We recommend Rational Project Conductor 1.0.0.1 iFix 1
This is a pre-release milestone build. We recommend that you install any pre-release build as an additional instance, in a separate directory, and that you do not "Update" your existing installation to the pre-release build using the IBM Installation Manager.

Rational Project Conductor - Release Notes

This document contains information about system requirements and known issues for the I16 iteration of Rational Project Conductor.

Description

IBM Rational Project Conductor is a project and resource management solution that is optimized for the Software and Systems Delivery (SSD) platform. This solution supports visibility and alignment across the entire project life cycle, which is scalable from small local teams to large distributed work groups.

Rational Project Conductor provides the ability to perform the following tasks:

  • Effectively manage program and project planning and scheduling.
  • Optimize the use of human resources to meet the demand.
  • Apply deep analytical capability across multiple projects and artifacts.
  • Adapt to the flexible project processes, agile and traditional project management with program reporting and measurement based on a uniform platform.
  • Automate project and program data collection, improve collaboration, and facilitate IBM Measured Capability Improvement Framework (MCIF).

System requirements

The following table shows the minimum system requirements for installing and using the product.

Item Requirements
Hardware
  • Processor: (minimum) Pentium® Xeon® (32-bit); (recommended) Dual core Xeon (32-bit)
  • Memory: 2 GB
  • Disk space: (minimum) 1 GB
  • Display: (minimum resolution) 1280 x 1024
  • Other hardware: 1000 mbps wired connectivity
Platform One of the following operating systems must be installed:
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop 5.0 x86-32, Update 1
  • Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 Server with Service Pack 2
Note: Although the server works on Windows XP and Windows Vista, these operating systems are not supported production environments.

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) (Bundled) IBM® JRE 1.5 Service Release 7
Identity management system

The following LDAP servers for identity management are supported:

  • IBM Tivoli® Directory Server 6.0
  • Microsoft Active Directory 2003 R2
Web browser You can use any of these browsers :
  • Mozilla Firefox 3.0.x
  • Microsoft® Internet Explorer 7.0

Known problems

The following list mentions the known problems for the I16 iteration of Rational Project Conductor:

Installation

  • The WebSphere Application Server does not respond when accessed concurrently by 50 or more users. You must tune the WebSphere Application Server parameters as mentioned in the following table:
Table 2. WebSphere Application Server Tuning parameters
    Tuning Parameters
    Before tuning After tuning
WebSphere Application Server- JVM Minimum heap size 50 256
    Maximum heap size 256 1024
WebSphere Application Server - Default and Web container thread pool Minimum heap size 15 20
    Maximum heap size 50 200

Rational Project Conductor - Rational Team Concert(RTC) integration

  • You can create iterations from both the applications but the start and end dates are not mapped in all cases. If you set start and end dates in Rational Project Conductor, the dates get updated correctly in RTC. But, if you set or update start and end dates of the iteration in RTC, it is not reflected back in Rational Project Conductor.
  • After you update the Filed against or Category in Rational Team Concert or Rational Project Conductor, you cannot modify these attributes again in either of the products.

Exchanging data with Microsoft Project

  • For all imported projects, you can update the Forecast information in the Financials viewlet.
  • All unmapped users are mapped to the profile selected during import to Rational Project Conductor.
  • Rational Project Conductor supports only the As Soon As Possible and Finish No Later Than constraints, and the Finish-to-Start dependency. As a result, some attributes in Microsoft Project schema do not get imported to Rational Project Conductor.
  • Importing large files to Rational Project Conductor takes some time. For example, importing a file of size 2 MB takes almost 5 minutes.
  • After you import a project from Microsoft Project, a task with multiple assignments is converted to a Summary task with sub-tasks containing individual assignments.
  • Synchronization between Microsoft Project and Rational Project Conductor is not supported.
  • When you export a project from Rational Project Conductor, iterations are not exported.
  • The calendar is ignored during import and export.
  • You cannot import Actual values.

General

  • A child element can be created only after the parent element is saved. For example, you can create a child time code only after the parent time code is created and saved.
  • When you access Rational Project Conductor through Internet Explorer 7, editing a numeric text box, such as Duration, is not possible as you cannot place the cursor in the field. To edit numeric text boxes in Rational Project Conductor from Internet Explorer 7, you must right-click the field and enter the value.
  • Adding more than one viewlets to a view will distort the view.
  • If you want to use the sample users provided with the sample database, you must add users manually to the LDAP directory or to the tomcat-users.xml file.
  • Navigating away from a page with unsaved changes discards the changes. No warning is displayed about unsaved changes.
  • If you are using Oracle database with WebSphere Application Server, you will get errors after logging in to Rational Project Conductor. You must restart the Jazz Team Server.
  • If you have migrated to the I16 iteration from a previous release and you are using the projects created in the previous releases, the Details viewlet will pop up errors. To avoid errors, you must modify the process configuration specification of those project areas. To modify the process configuration of the project area:
    1. In the Rational Team Concert Eclipse client, right-click the project area, and click Open.
    2. Click the Process Configuration tab and expand Project Configuration > Configuration Data > Work Items > Editor Presentations.
    3. Select com.ibm.epm.work.editor.project from the dropdown.
    4. In the Editor Presentation section, expand Overview > Details.
    5. Select Time code and Charge code, and click Remove.
    6. Click Save.

Work management

  • You can create a project only as a child of a program or project.
  • You cannot rename a project after it is created.
  • Creating more than 100 projects causes a memory leak.
  • Work items cannot be moved from one project to another.
  • Dependencies can be created only between tasks.
  • Scheduling of WBS elements considers the working hours from the process specification and the exceptions from the project calendar.
  • If you expand a WBS element that is nesting 70 or more elements from the WBS tree, an unresponsive script error message is displayed. Click Continue to proceed.

Resource management

  • Project profiles cannot be edited.
  • Resource calendar cannot be changed.
  • Resources cannot be allocated to a program.
  • You cannot assign multiple resources to any work breakdown structure (WBS) element apart from projects.
  • Searching and assigning resources based on availability can be time consuming.
  • Multiple selection of the AND condition in the Resource Query Editor returns incorrect results.
  • Resource/Profile assignment can be done for a maximum period of five years.
  • Unassigning a resource will unassign from the current date, irrespective of the actuals entered.

Timesheet

  • There is no synchronization between work item time spent and data in timesheet for duration based timesheets.

Financials

  • Information in the Financials viewlet is available only for a project.
